More Details

Yamanaka Lacquerware

Yamanaka lacquerware traces its origins back to the late 16th century in the mountains of Ishikawa, Japan. Skilled wood-turning artisans first created exquisite vessels from chestnut, cherry, and other native woods. Over time, these craftsmen began coating their work with layers of natural lacquer to protect and enhance the wood’s beauty. The result was a perfect harmony between durability and refinement—tableware that could be used every day yet admired like art. Today, Yamanaka lacquerware remains a beloved symbol of Japanese craftsmanship, bringing warmth and quiet elegance to the modern dining table.

Oryoki Bowl (Nesting Set)

Oryoki bowls are a nested set of tableware traditionally used by monks and practitioners of Zen Buddhism. They use these bowls in a formal and meditative style of eating that pays great attention to detail in order to cultivate gratitude, mindfulness, and a better understanding of self. Oryoki sets of three to six bowls are commonly made of wood and are often lacquered.

FAQ

How do I care for my Oryoki lacquered bowl set?

Hand-wash only with warm water and a soft sponge — no dishwasher, microwave, oven, prolonged soaking, or abrasive scrubbers. Dry immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Store away from direct sunlight and dry heat (radiators, ovens), which over time can cause the natural urushi lacquer to crack.

Is Japanese lacquerware dishwasher safe?

Generally, no. Traditional Japanese lacquerware, including lacquered chopsticks, miso soup bowls, Oryoki bowls, and serving trays, should be hand-washed. Dishwasher heat, strong detergents, prolonged moisture, and contact with other items can gradually damage the lacquer finish or wooden base.

Wash lacquerware with warm water and a soft sponge, then dry it promptly with a soft cloth. Avoid prolonged soaking, abrasive cleaners, and scrub brushes. Even when labeled dishwasher safe, we strongly recommend hand-washing all lacquerware to preserve its finish and beauty over time.

Can I add a gift message to my order?

Yes. You may add a personalized gift message of up to 250 characters at checkout — it is printed on a card and included inside the package. Prices and order details are never shown on the card or anywhere in the shipment, so the recipient sees only your message and the gift itself.

Will my order be wrapped as a gift?

Yes. Every JOC Goods order is wrapped in a traditional Japanese furoshiki cloth before shipping at no extra charge — both gifts and personal orders. If your order includes many or large items, the furoshiki may be packed inside the box rather than wrapped around them. Prices are never included in any shipment.
